Mō te tūranga - About the role
As a Technology Legacy Analyst, the analyst brings a thoughtful and curious mindset to understanding and supporting ANZ’s legacy applications. This includes working with older technologies such as mainframes, COBOL, and traditional databases, ensuring they remain secure, reliable, and high-performing during transition planning.
Key contributions include:
Conducting technical analysis to uncover constraints and identify opportunities for improvement.
Understanding architecture and data flows to support seamless integration with modern platforms.
Collaborating with infrastructure, security, and data teams to plan and execute safe, strategic decommissioning.
Supporting migration efforts to cloud-native and SaaS platforms, including post-migration validation.
Translating business and technical requirements into actionable outcomes, while mentoring others in a collaborative environment.
This capability plays a critical role in enabling transformation while maintaining operational integrity across legacy environments.

Role Type: 12 month Secondment
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Ka aha tō rā e kite ai? - What will your day look like
You will be responsible for:
- Investigating and documenting how legacy applications function, including mainframes, COBOL systems, and older databases
- Monitoring application performance and proactively addressing any reliability or security concerns
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues
- Exploring and mapping data flows, dependencies, and integration points to support architectural understanding
- Supporting the safe and strategic decommissioning of legacy systems, ensuring compliance and data retention
- Participating in planning and executing migration activities to modern platforms, including testing and validation
- Working closely with architecture and engineering teams to align with cloud-native or SaaS solutions
- Maintaining clear documentation of technical decisions, risks, and mitigation strategies
- Ensuring applications meet governance and regulatory standards, with a focus on audit readiness
Sharing knowledge generously by mentoring junior team members and contributing to a collaborative team culture
Ōu Pūkenga? - What will you bring?
To thrive and excel in this role, you should ideally possess the following:
- A thoughtful and persistent approach to understanding how legacy systems operate, with a genuine curiosity for uncovering technical details
- Hands-on experience with at least two legacy programming languages such as COBOL, FORTRAN, PL1 or Assembler
- Familiarity with mainframe tools and environments including JCL (Job Control Language), CICS and REXX
- A calm and adaptable nature, especially when navigating transformation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a detail-oriented mindset and awareness of risk
- Proven experience in application decommissioning, data archiving and migration to modern platforms
- A collaborative spirit, with the ability to build trusted relationships across technology and business teams
- Comfort working in Agile delivery environments
- A passion for learning and a proactive attitude towards exploring how technology can solve complex challenges
