Mō te tūranga - About the role


As an Infrastructure Engineer, the role is responsible for the efficient support and ongoing reliability of the Unix virtualisation environment, including Solaris and RHEL virtual machines, ensuring high availability and timely resolution of infrastructure incidents. The position plays a key role in maintaining and modernising the existing infrastructure by adopting new technologies, tools, and operational methodologies. A strong focus is placed on enhancing legacy Unix support through the introduction of automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC), driving improved consistency, scalability, and operational efficiency across the platform.

Role Type: Permanent 
Hours: Standard 37.5 per week with some contributions to a 24/7 roster

Ka aha tō rā e kite ai? - What will your day look like


You will be responsible for:

  • Supporting a Solaris Utility Compute infrastructure fleet, including multiple Oracle VM (OVM) farms running on Oracle T7 and T8 server hardware.
  • Managing platform capacity to ensure optimal performance, scalability, and high availability of the infrastructure.
  • Responding to platform incidents and being available to assist with incidents impacting hosted workloads, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
  • Maintaining high support standards with minimal impact to users and the business, consistently meeting defined SLA timelines.
  • Operating in a highly dynamic technology environment by continuously developing skills, self-training on new technologies and methodologies, and complementing formal learning opportunities to maximise effectiveness.
  • Driving automation and operational efficiency by identifying opportunities for automation or process improvements, and implementing changes that enhance platform stability and reduce manual effort.

To thrive and excel in this role, you should ideally possess the following:

  • Strong hands-on experience and technical expertise in OVM, LDOMs, Puppet, Red Hat Satellite, RHEL, and Solaris.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills to diagnose and resolve complex infrastructure issues.
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills for collaboration across teams.
  • Proven automation and scripting capability, with experience in Python, YAML, Ruby, JavaScript, REST APIs, or PHP.


Good-to-have knowledge, skills, and experience include:

  • Experience with enterprise-scale environments, including disaster recovery planning and large server estates (1,000+ servers).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, code repositories, automated testing, and tools such as Splunk and ServiceNow.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Working knowledge of database technologies such as Oracle, Sybase, MS SQL, or PostgreSQL.
