Mō te tūranga - About the role
Be part of ANZ’s Cards Switch team and help power the real time processing of millions of card transactions across New Zealand — from ATMs and in store purchases to online payments. Our switch ensures every transaction is validated, authorised, routed, and processed securely and instantly. You’ll be working at the heart of a platform that moves high speed, bidirectional payment traffic between merchants, ATMs, acquirers, issuers, and card schemes.

- Partner with a mix of business analysts, senior engineers, testers, vendors, and operational specialists.

Role Type: Permanent
Role Location: Wellington or Auckland
Work Hours: Standard 37.5 hours per week
Ka aha tō rā e kite ai? - What will your day look like
You will be responsible for:
- Analysing card transaction flows across the switch (authorisations, clearing, settlement, reversals)
- Designing, developing and enhancing switch functionality to support Visa, Mastercard and domestic schemes
- Writing, reviewing and maintaining high quality, well-documented code and SQL scripts for real time transaction processing
- Investigating production issues, tracing transactions end to end, and resolving incidents to keep the switch running 24/7
- Working closely with product owners, business analysts and vendors to translate requirements into technical solutions
- Supporting scheme mandates, regulatory changes and certification activities
- Participating in release planning, deployments, and post implementation reviews
- Contributing to on call support and collaborating with operations teams to minimise customer impact
- Sharing knowledge, improving documentation, and continuously learning about payments technologies and industry trends
Ōu Pūkenga? - What will you bring?
To thrive and excel in this role, you should ideally possess the following:
- 2 years’ experience as an Analyst Programmer, ideally in the card payments industry.
- Understanding of ATM/POS acquired card transaction authorisation, routing, and processing.
- Java and SQL Technologies experience.
- Familiarity with standard development tools, eg Github, Bitbucket and Artifactory repository
- Experience with production incident analysis and problem management.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Experience in Agile and SDLC delivery environments.
- Ability to work independently and manage ambiguity.
- Understanding of New Zealand payments ecosystem (issuers, acquirers, merchants).
