Mō te tūranga - About the role

As a Software Engineer in our Institutional Technology team, you will be supporting a suite of business‑critical systems that underpin core Markets operations.

This is a hands‑on DevOps role where you’ll be involved across the full delivery lifecycle, from development and deployment through to monitoring and production support. The role also includes participation in a support roster, so a strong sense of ownership, reliability, and responsiveness is important.

Our environment includes a mix of modern and legacy technologies, where stability and resilience are key. At the same time, we are focused on simplifying how we operate, improving platform health, and delivering ongoing enhancements to support evolving business needs.

You’ll be contributing to a range of technical uplift and continuous improvement initiatives, helping to modernise systems, streamline processes, and support more efficient ways of working.

We’re looking for someone who is pragmatic, delivery‑focused, and collaborative, with solid technical capability and a willingness to learn and grow. As a Software Engineer, you will:

  • Work on high‑impact, business‑critical systems
  • Contribute to improving system stability, performance, and reliability
  • Support production systems and help resolve issues when they arise
  • Collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to deliver outcomes
  • Continuously learn and apply best practices across development and operations

This is a great opportunity to be part of a small, supportive team, working on systems that are central to the business, with opportunities to build your skills across both engineering and operational support.

Role Type: Permanent
Role Location: Wellington
Work Hours: 37.5 hrs with On call support

Ka aha tō rā e kite ai? - What will your day look like?

As a Software Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Support the stability and performance of business‑critical applications, including participation in a support roster and responding to production incidents in a timely and effective manner.
  • Design, develop, and implement technical changes across supported systems, ensuring solutions align with business needs, regulatory expectations, and engineering standards.
  • Maintain and enhance CI/CD pipelines, contributing to automation initiatives that reduce manual effort, improve reliability, and streamline delivery.
  • Collaborate effectively with teams across different locations and time zones, including internal technology teams, service providers, and operations teams.
  • Contribute to ongoing system improvements and modernisation efforts, including simplifying existing solutions and supporting the evolution of current platforms.
  • Identify opportunities to improve system performance, reduce complexity, and enhance the overall developer and operational experience.
  • Take ownership of assigned work, balancing BAU support and delivery activities, and managing time and priorities effectively.

Ōu Pūkenga? - What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

  • 3+ years of relevant experience
  • Good understanding of DevOps practices, with hands‑on experience contributing to CI/CD pipelines and working in container-based environments (e.g. Jenkins, GitLab CI, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).
  • Exposure to monitoring and alerting tools such as Splunk and Dynatrace, with an understanding of how they are used in supporting production systems
  • Solid experience in designing, developing, and maintaining Java applications across the software lifecycle.
  • Working knowledge of core technologies and practices including SQL, ORM, J2EE, Maven/Gradle, microservices, and Agile delivery approaches (e.g. Scrum/Kanban).
  • Experience using frameworks such as Spring Boot and Hibernate to build and support services.
  • Practical experience working with REST APIs, message queues, and system integration using REST/JSON.
  • Familiarity with software testing practices, including unit testing and exposure to automation and vulnerability management.
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic environment with changing priorities and some ambiguity.
  • Strong problem-solving ability, with a curious mindset and willingness to learn and grow.
  • Some understanding of financial markets or trading environments is beneficial, but not essential.

‘Good to have’ knowledge, skills and experiences:

  • Experience working with container platforms such as Kubernetes or OpenShift
  • Understanding of DevOps principles and practices in a delivery environment
  • Familiarity with non‑functional testing (e.g. performance, resilience, and security)
  • Exposure to monitoring and observability tools such as Splunk and Dynatrace
  • Experience contributing to testing and quality practices within a team
