About the Role
As a Head of Business Governance and Controls (BG&C) Japan, in our Institutional BG&C team, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring ANZ’s Institutional Division effectively manages non-financial risks within appetite. Operating within the Group Risk Management Framework, you will drive cultural change, embedding risk awareness and accountability across the business. A critical aspect of your role will be the proactive management and oversight of non-financial risk (NFR), ensuring Line 1 adheres to the framework, monitors risk exposure, and implements effective controls. You will partner with risk owners to strengthen risk governance, advise on risk mitigation strategies, and support the identification of emerging strategic risks. Additionally, you will help enhance risk culture, drive automation initiatives, support business continuity planning, and ensure compliance with policy requirements—all contributing to a resilient and well-controlled operating environment.

What will your day look like?
As a Head of Business Governance and Controls, you will ensure alignment with ANZ’s I.AM Framework for ANZ Japan. You will work closely with risk owners, the country head, CTOO, CFO, operations leaders, and product & relationship teams to maintain high governance standards while balancing commercial objectives.
- Execute core assurance functions under ANZ’s I.AM Framework Control Officer role, including risk profiling, control testing, KRI monitoring, event and treatment management, and audit item remediation tracking.
- Conduct risk assessments, facilitating acceptance by senior stakeholders or leading business remediation efforts as required.
- Prepare and participate in Risk Management Committees and Forums, providing insights on key risk metrics and advising leadership.
- Lead the delivery of Country Risk Attestations (CPS220/CPS234), ensuring alignment with regulatory and internal standards.
- Identify trends and emerging risks, advising the country leadership team on strategic improvements to the risk and control environment.
- Manage business continuity assurance in line with ANZ framework requirements, ensuring operational resilience.
- Drive non-financial risk awareness, education, and training, embedding a strong risk culture across the organization.
- Partner with ANZ Japan business to support risk management accountabilities, including change management, audit item remediation, event responses, and control implementation.
- Pursue cost-effective, innovative, and competitive strategies that strengthen risk management while enhancing business performance.
- Provide operational risk review and advisory on local policies, procedures, products, and projects to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
What will you bring?
To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:
- Operational risk management experience, with strong capabilities in risk mitigation, control testing, and compliance oversight.
- Line management experience, ensuring effective leadership, team coordination, and stakeholder engagement.
- Thorough understanding of ANZ Risk and Compliance management, including frameworks, policies, and governance.
- Proven ability to manage complex senior stakeholder relationships, utilizing strong influencing and negotiation skills.
- Expertise in handling competing priorities and escalations, maintaining professionalism while balancing business and risk considerations.
- Strategic advisory skills, identifying emerging risks and driving continuous improvement in the risk and control environment.
- Strong business process improvement experience, with a focus on automation, efficiency, and operational risk mitigation.
- Knowledge of India’s banking practices, regulatory requirements, and statutory compliance frameworks.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, ensuring clarity in reporting, stakeholder interactions, and risk management discussions.
- Ability to challenge the status quo, implementing well-managed risk solutions that align with business objectives while operating within appetite.
