The Financial Crime Portfolio protects ANZ, our customers and our communities by leading effective financial crime risk management across the bank. As Head of Financial Crime, Governance, this role reports to the Group General Manager Financial Crime & Group MLRO and plays a pivotal role in the governance of Financial Crime Compliance (FCC) across ANZ and for overseeing the management of Financial Crime & Fraud Risk Themes in line with the NFR Operating Model. The team works to provide independent enterprise confidence that financial crime risks are understood, controlled and effective, and that outcomes can be credibly demonstrated to Boards and regulators; provide an independent confidence layer over the FC risk management framework, including obligations governance, Management Information, thematic assurance coordination, issues management, and independent model validation and data governance. The roles supports governance of the roles of the AML Compliance Officer and Scams Prevention Office governance and certification readiness.
Your key accountabilities in this role will include:
- Provide assurance to the Group MLRO and Head of Financial Crime Portfolio on the effectiveness, maturity and sustainability of the enterprise Financial Crime risk management framework.
- Lead enterprise governance and regulatory reporting across Board and executive committees, ensuring high‑quality insights, escalation of material risks, and clear accountability for outcomes.
- Oversee the enterprise Financial Crime risk profile, integrating regulatory change, external threat intelligence, market developments and emerging risks into forward‑looking risk assessment and response.
- Own and coordinate the Group’s integrated assurance strategy, including 2LoD thematic testing, alignment with Internal Audit, and end‑to‑end visibility of control effectiveness across the three lines of defence.
- Establish and govern robust issue, breach and remediation frameworks, ensuring timely resolution, evidence integrity, and transparent reporting to executives and regulators.
- Exercise independent oversight of Financial Crime model risk, including validation frameworks for detection and screening models, and linkage of performance outcomes to risk remediation and control uplift.
- Drive enterprise data governance for Financial Crime, ensuring integrity, lineage, ownership and quality of critical risk and control data to support decision making and regulatory obligations.
- Set the strategic direction for Financial Crime governance, capability and culture, including leading a high performing team and influencing senior stakeholders on interpretation and implementation of regulatory and compliance frameworks.
About You
To grow and be successful in this role, you’ll ideally bring the following:
- Extensive Financial Crime, Compliance and Non-Financial Risk experience within banking or financial services with deep expertise across AML/CTF, KYC, Sanctions and Fraud in multi‑jurisdictional environments
- Broad and demonstrable experience across Compliance and Non-Financial Risk, including governance, assurance, regulatory engagement and risk management frameworks
- The ability to lead and motivate diverse teams, anchoring your approach in ANZ’s values. This includes a reputation for coaching, encouraging curiosity and investing in people development.
- Strong understanding of the banking operating environment, including business strategy, market dynamics and key drivers of the risk/reward relationship.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain highly effective internal and external networks, enabling collaboration across senior stakeholders, regulators and industry forums.
- Demonstrated experience influencing, negotiating and providing strategic guidance to senior leaders on complex regulatory and compliance matters.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex Financial Crime and risk insights into clear, actionable reporting for Board and Executive audiences.
- Proven leadership capability with deep interpersonal skills, including building, leading and developing high-performing teams and fostering a strong compliance and risk culture.
