About the Role
We are looking for a senior lawyer to take on the role of Legal Director, Privacy & Data to lead ANZ’s enterprise‑wide legal capability in privacy, data protection and data‑driven technologies, including artificial intelligence. This is a senior leadership role with broad organisational impact.
You will lead the Privacy & Data Legal team, which acts as the centre of excellence for privacy and data law, partnering closely with Technology, Data, Risk, Compliance, Procurement, Security and Divisional Legal teams to deliver pragmatic, commercially aligned legal advice in a complex and evolving regulatory environment, across Australia and ANZ’s global operations.

What will your day look like?
In this role, you will:
- Lead the Privacy & Data Legal team, setting strategy, priorities and building a high‑performing specialist capability.
- Act as the senior legal advisor on Australian privacy, data protection and AI regulation across the organisation.
- Shape enterprise data governance, privacy risk management, DPIAs/PIAs and regulatory compliance frameworks.
- Partner closely with Risk, Security and Data teams on major regulatory uplift programs and legislative reform.
- Provide legal leadership on data‑driven technologies, including artificial intelligence, machine learning and advanced analytics.
- Advise on AI governance, responsible AI practices and regulatory developments impacting automated decision‑making.
- Support the safe testing, deployment and use of AI and data technologies, balancing innovation, risk and compliance.
- Lead privacy and data aspects of complex commercial, cloud, technology, outsourcing and supplier arrangements.
- Oversee development and negotiation of data protection addenda, privacy clauses and contractual standards.
- Support engagements with regulators and oversee responses to privacy‑related inquiries, audits and investigations.
- Support data‑related due diligence, data subject rights and information access requests, including M&A activity.
- Build strong relationships with senior executives and act as a trusted advisor on privacy and data legal risk.
- Influence enterprise and industry positions on privacy, data and AI regulatory reform.
- Collaborate across Legal & Corporate Governance to ensure consistent, high‑quality advice across the enterprise.
What will you bring?
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- 15+ years post‑qualification experience specialising in privacy and data law, ideally within highly regulated or complex environments
- Deep expertise in Australian privacy law, with strong working knowledge of international privacy regimes
- A proven ability to advise on complex, enterprise‑wide legal issues and deliver clear, pragmatic, commercially sound advice
- Demonstrated leadership experience building and leading high‑performing legal teams
- Confidence operating at executive level and influencing senior stakeholders across legal, technology and business functions
- Strong judgement, strategic thinking and the ability to translate complex regulation into practical outcomes
- A collaborative working style and strong track record of partnering effectively with legal and non‑legal teams
