About the Role

 

As a Chief Risk Officer, Vanuatu and Kiribati, you are responsible for ensuring the financial and reputation integrity of the ANZ Vanuatu and Kiribati business through the effective treatment and mitigation of risks (Credit, Market, Operational, Technology, Liquidity, Strategic and Compliance). You must be a credible and visible Champion for a strong ‘risk culture’ amongst colleagues and peers. 

 

Given the changing nature of the global financial markets and global/regional/country macroeconomic and geo-political issues, this role will need to remain focussed on understanding the changes in the market place and hence the changing risk setting and communicating these proactively and clearly to senior management.

Role Location: Flexible remote working options will be considered and / or Branch, Port Vila, Vanuatu.   

Role Type: Permanent, Full-time  

What will your day look like?

  • Communicates and manages the budget for Vanuatu & Kiribati Risk.
  • Supports execution of business operating plans.
  • Maintains portfolio credit quality within established tolerances, avoiding unexpected credit (and non-lending) losses.
  • Ensures operating processes are robust in order to minimise the potential for loss including credit, markets and non-lending (operating) losses
  • Monitors Markets exposures to ensure that they remain within limits and that prudent parameters are in place.
  • Works in collaboration and consultation with key stakeholders from across different business functions to strengthen risk governance structure and infrastructure
  • Builds and maintains strong professional relationships with the Country Regulators, Audit (internal & external) and relevant stakeholders to support franchise sustainability.
  • Maintains effective ownership of Vanuatu and Kiribati risk management, credit policies, control frameworks, regulatory compliance processes.
  • Presents Vanuatu and Kiribati portfolio profile and any emerging risks to Governance committees and Samoa Board as required.

What will you bring?


To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

 

  • Extensive experience in business and risk-related roles.
  • In-depth knowledge and exposure to Risk & Compliance management frameworks.
  • Financial analytical skills, that may have been gained in credit or finance role.
  • Strong collaboration, relationship-building, networking, and communication skills.
  • Proven leadership experience—demonstrated concern for team development and ability to grow others.
  • Strategic management and thought leadership capabilities.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, deliver under real-time business demands, and manage conflicting priorities effectively.
  • Strong leadership qualities, excellent communication skills, high emotional intelligence (EQ), and decisiveness. Able to communicate confidently with diverse stakeholders across cultures, geographies, and technical areas (legal, middle office, front office, sales, RMs, product, Lending Services)—a prerequisite for the role.
  • Risk-oriented mindset with a strong understanding of the risk/reward philosophy underpinning sound banking practices.
  • Experience engaging with external banking regulators.
  • Management experience in international business environments.
