About the Role
As the Head of Operational Risk and Compliance, PNG, your primary responsibility is to execute governance and compliance duties relating to ANZ's Non-Financial Risk Frameworks, Regulatory and Legislative requirements through implementation as well as education across the ANZ PNG Business and Risk. Additionally, this position will oversee Anti Money Laundering (AML)/Counter-Terrorism Financing (CTF) and Sanction matters for PNG.
As a second-line risk function, the role is mandated to lead a team providing independent review and constructive challenge in line with its objectives.

What will your day look like?
As a Head of Operational Risk & Compliance, you are accountable for:
- Promoting customer-focused compliance by minimizing disruptions from compliance policies and ensuring they support positive customer experiences.
- Provide governance oversight for operational risk and compliance, aligning risk management with strategic objectives and ensuring reporting and escalation processes are consistently followed throughout the organization.
- Act as the primary advisory contact for Non-Financial Risk matters, regulatory compliance matters including AML/CTF & Sanctions, and actively participate in key industry groups and forums.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with senior business and risk stakeholders to drive optimal outcomes from Regulatory and Audit reviews and proactively manage compliance to minimize customer impact.
- Foster a culture of compliance and collaboration within the business and across jurisdictions, managing implementation of frameworks including ANZ’s Non-Financial Risk Framework and addressing breaches or gaps as they are identified.
- Lead and support the 2nd line strategic implementation of review and challenges activities across the business.
- Lead the Operational Risk & Compliance team to embed a culture of responsibility and deliver strong governance outcomes.
- Lead by example by demonstrating and encouraging behaviours essential for a strong risk culture. Embrace and support change, facilitate the sharing of best practice ideas, identify potential process or service enhancements, escalate as appropriate, and document recommendations for improvement.
What will you bring?
To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:
- Extensive experience in banking, preferably within a regulated financial services environment.
- Demonstrated understanding of Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Counter-Terrorism Financing (CTF), and Sanctions obligations, including practical application within ANZ or similar institutions.
- Proven experience managing Operational Risk and Compliance requirements.
- Strong working knowledge of banking operations, payments systems, processes, and AML/CTF and Sanctions policies.
- Solid understanding of Operational Risk and Compliance management frameworks.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to assess complex risk and compliance issues.
- Practical knowledge of local legislative and regulatory requirements relevant to banking and financial services.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders across various levels.
- Strong decision-making capability, demonstrating sound judgment in a risk-based environment.
- Tertiary qualification or post graduate degree in related field.
