As a Java Staff Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping technical direction while remaining hands-on with development. You’ll combine deep engineering expertise with leadership that elevates the people and systems around you. 

 

You’ll be working on our Internet Banking platform, helping uplift and modernise the backend application, while building features that power our customer‑facing experiences. Working closely with the frontend and services teams across the Internet Banking ecosystem. 

 

Role Location: Auckland or Wellington.

Role Type: Permanent

Hours: Standard 37.5hrs

Ka aha tō rā e kite ai? - What will your day look like

In this role, you will have the opportunity to: 

 

  

  • Lead the design and build of new features on our Internet Banking Backend Platform using Java  
  • Play a critical role in discovery and driving innovation across RESTful API and event-driven solutions  
  • Work with databases, data stores and secure customer identity and access management systems 
  • Participate in code reviews and technical design decisions 
  • Help build engineering principles and standards based on industry best practice 
  • Collaborate with architects, product owners, external vendors and other stakeholders to get the best outcome 
  • Drive and promote platform uplift, stability and resilience 
  • Maintain delivery pipelines and support continuous delivery 
  • Contribute to the engineering and platform digital strategy and roadmap 
  • Contribute to communities of practices and provide guidance across the wider technology landscape 
  • Work in a supportive and agile environment 
  • Mentor and coach other engineers 

Ōu Pūkenga? - What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in this role you will bring most of the following:

 

  • Strong development experience building enterprise applications using Java (12+ years) 
  • Good understanding of software development principles and microservices architectures 
  • Strong technical leadership experience and proven track record in influencing technical direction 
  • Able to convey complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders effectively 
  • Demonstrates strong critical thinking and decision-making skills, even under demanding deadlines 
  • Strong technical knowledge for designing scalable, reliable, and maintainable applications utilizing CI/CD pipelines 
  • Strong Scrum/Agile skills 
  • Experience working with remote vendor teams
