Mō te tūranga - About the role

As a Financial Controller in our Financial Control team, you will provide Business Unit (BU) accounting and reporting services to support the Head of Financial Control (HoFC), including provision of accurate and timely financial information to the wider NZ CFO Units Finance team, ensuring that all financial and regulatory reporting obligations across the BU are adequately met. You will lead and manage the Financial Control Revenue team, providing appropriate leadership and support to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of month-end delivery requirements including reconciliations, trial balance, and that accounting services are completed to support the BU.

As a Financial Control Lead, you will be accountable for:

 

  • Managing the monthly financial close process, including finalisation of actuals, month on month analytical review, delivery of results to the HoFC and senior Finance managers; appropriate governance activities to support the integrity of the actuals
  • Onshore and offshore delivery and performance including resolution of issues (including offshore issue escalation)
  • Building and maintaining effective, collaborative relationships with stakeholders in NZ (Senior Finance managers and other management functions e.g. Products, Operations, Legal), and with Group colleagues, ensuring all needs are delivered and information is effectively exchanged to support Financial Control activities
  • Ensuring the accuracy of Financial Control outputs, with processes complying with Group policies and procedures
  • Embedding simplification, standardisation, elimination and relocation of financial control activities/processes where appropriate; driving end-to-end process improvement across the Bank with pragmatic, comprehensive recommendations.   
  • Recruiting, motivating, developing and managing the performance of direct reports to ensure quality output and team cohesion.

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

  • Many years of professional experience in Finance roles
  • Significant demonstrated experience with statutory and regulatory accounting within a banking/insurance environment
  • Effective leadership of finance professionals
  • Strong interpersonal skills engaging with a diverse range of colleagues and stakeholders
  • Ability to influence at all levels and drive change
  • Strong detailed and conceptual analytical problem-solving skills with an end-to-end process lens and customer focus
  • Experience leading work with off-shore sites preferable
  • Chartered Accountant, Certified Practicing Accountant or equivalent will be highly desired
