This is an exciting opportunity to join ANZ’s Payments Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team, which plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of our Payments platform. The SRE chapter operates as an autonomous unit while collaborating closely with build and run squads across ANZ.
As a Senior Database Reliability Engineer, you’ll be a senior technical specialist focused on database reliability, performance, compliance, and developer enablement across on‑prem, hybrid, and cloud environments. You’ll work hands-on with modern cloud technologies while influencing best practices, and driving automation and observability in database operations.
Ka aha tō rā e kite ai? - What will your day look like
Your day will involve managing and optimizing database services across GCP, AWS, and on‑prem environments, ensuring resilience, security, and high performance. You’ll support migrations from on‑prem to cloud, automate workflows, and embed compliance and governance controls. You’ll collaborate with developers, and Site Reliability engineers to improve developer experience and reduce operational toil through tooling and documentation.
Other responsibilities include:
- Optimize and support Cloud Native databases
- Manage and administer relational and NoSQL databases
- Support database transitions from on‑prem to Cloud and hybrid environments.
- Perform database backup/recovery, performance tuning, and security management.
- Champion automation using IaC tools, including database change automation
- Build internal tooling and documentation to improve developer experience with database services.
- Explore and apply AI‑driven solutions
- Contribute to SRE practices including observability, incident response, and error‑budget aligned operations.

Ōu Pūkenga? - What will you bring?
To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:
- Strong hands‑on experience with Cloud databases (e.g. Cloud Spanner, BigQuery) and relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL).
- Expertise in NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Redis, ElasticSearch)
- Experience in database migrations between on‑prem and cloud platforms.
- Proficiency in database backup/recovery, performance tuning, and security management.
- Experience in Terraform, Git, Codefresh, Python, and CI/CD pipelines for cloud infrastructure.
- Knowledge of ETL/ELT workflows and data integration patterns.
- Understanding of SRE principles (SLIs/SLOs, incident response, observability) and ability to define/measure DB‑focused SLIs
- Familiarity with observability tooling and centralized logging/tracing.
- Experience with data compliance and security tooling (IAM, encryption, auditing).
- Awareness of FinOps practices for data platforms (cost governance for BigQuery/Spanner and data pipelines).
- Interest or experience in AI‑driven database engineering (e.g., query tuning, anomaly detection, usage pattern analysis).
- Ability to influence technical practices within the team, with strong collaboration and stakeholder communication skills.
