About the Role
As a Corporate Lawyer, you will provide high quality, commercially relevant legal advice and support to the ANZ India business comprising branches in Mumbai, GIFT City, Bengaluru and Gurugram (the supported business). You will also support the risk, compliance and enablement partners in India. As part of this role, you will also have the opportunity to provide transactional and advisory support to the ANZ Institutional cross-border coverage Business working closely with the Legal teams in the region.
You must be capable of proactively carrying out the following activities for the supported business on matters up to a complex level, with medium supervision:
- Negotiate and draft documentation and assist with execution of the supported business’ transactions relating to products and services;
- Develop and maintain legal documentation, templates, guides and checklists, ensuring consistency of documentation across the division and the region;
- Provide general legal advice on the day-to-day operational issues and matters with a focus on being proactive;
- Help resolve the supported business’ legal, regulatory or customer problems;
- Help assess and implement regulatory change, strategic change and growth initiatives;
- Provide regulatory advice and advice on compliance with or breach of the law (including breach reporting) on the regulatory issues facing the supported business, including as necessary interactions with regulators;

- Provide advice on the entry into and governance of the principal transactions, joint ventures, partnerships or other investment activities undertaken by the supported business;
- Provide advice on the development of and approval of the new and innovative services, products, channels, or payment, settlement or clearing systems, exchanges or other financial infrastructure;
- Help obtain licenses to support distribution of products and services;
- Provide advice on and assistance with the remediation activities, regulatory enquiries or investigations, requests for information, disputes, complaints or other issues faced by the supported business;
- Provide advice on the entry into, ongoing maintenance and resolution of issues relating to the strategic contracts and tenders undertaken by the supported business; and
- Help Senior Lawyers and Heads of Legal to be in a position to assist stakeholders understand the legal and regulatory landscape and its impact on their transactions, projects and initiatives.
- Minimise legal costs by reducing reliance on external legal support, ensuring competitive pricing on external legal spending, managing the use of external legal services to ensure legal requirements are met within budget and agreed timelines in a cost effective and efficient manner, developing internal expertise through training, knowhow sharing and expanding exposure, and improving internal efficiencies

Working on matters up to the complex level with medium supervision requires the holder of this role to have at least an adequate standard of:
- technical legal skills;
- ability to work at pace with care;
- understanding of legal, regulatory, operational and commercial risks relevant to the supported business and its products;
- understanding of the supported business and its customers;
- soft skills (communication skills, stakeholder management skills, prioritization and organizational skills),
- that in each case allows the holder of this role to deliver work ranging from low complexity with very limited supervision to complex with medium supervision.

What will your day look like?
- Provide technically excellent, strategic and solutions orientated legal and regulatory advice to legal, risk and business stakeholders across the supported region, helping to ensure the right outcomes are achieved.
- Communicates clearly and effectively.
- Develop and demonstrate a strong understanding of the business, including its strategic agenda and customers.
- Proven ability to build strong relationships with the business.
- Contribute positively to the timely and efficient delivery of products and services to customers by the business, helping achieve business, regulator and customer objectives.
- Contribute to maintaining a well-managed business by identifying, raising and managing legal and regulatory risks and issues.
- Support the business and its operations and risk partners to understand the legal and regulatory landscape, global trends and risks in the execution of their strategic plans, helping to implement changes as appropriate.
- Collaborate across Legal & Corporate Governance, contributing towards the provision of seamless service to the supported business.
- Stay up-to-date with emerging trends, practices and information, translating and applying it in a relevant and well communicated way for the supported business

- Engage external legal advisers in a manner that ensures value for money and appropriate cost control and where possible keeps work in-house rather than briefing external lawyers.
What will you bring?
To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:
- Proven years of post-qualification experience as a lawyer (either in-house counsel and/or in private practice) with strong technical legal expertise in banking and finance law and proven ability to exercise excellent judgement in the identification and management of legal risk
- Strong understanding of the business of banking and role of institutional banking and has started to develop a good understanding of the specific business and region supported by the role, including the products distributed by the business and its customers.
- Ability to deliver timely legal advice in a way that helps the business achieve its commercial objectives whilst understanding legal risk
- A good risk radar and confidence to speak-up and escalate risks appropriately
- Strong ability to work at pace with care
- Tertiary legal qualification
- Admission as a lawyer in India or another jurisdiction as appropriate for the role
