About the Role
As an Observability Lead Engineer within Enterprise Service Operations, you will play a pivotal role in managing Enterprise Observability APM platforms and monitoring visibility across ANZ’s critical applications and services. You will provide expert guidance for operating the observability platform and establish best-practice frameworks to uplift observability capabilities across technology teams, enhancing performance monitoring and operational resilience.
This role is instrumental in driving the adoption of modern observability practices, including OpenTelemetry, and in building scalable, secure, and cost-efficient telemetry ecosystems spanning metrics, events, logs, and traces (MELT). In addition, you will contribute to the management of the tribe backlog, working closely with the Product Owner to prioritise initiatives, manage dependencies, and translate features into well-defined epics that support effective delivery outcomes.

What will your day look like?
As an Observability Engineer, you will:
- Provide technology and architecture leadership to the Enterprise Observability team, driving best practices in observability and guiding the effective adoption and use of tools & concepts, such as Dynatrace, New Relic, and OpenTelemetry.
- Collaborate across technology teams to uplift and optimise the organisation’s monitoring maturity, adoption, and utilisation.
- Support the design and development of best-in-class monitoring systems, observability practices, and tooling capabilities.
- Contribute to and where required lead, sprint activities to deploy observability tools and services that enable real-time operational visibility across domains and for the Command Centre.
- Leverage APM platforms (e.g. Dynatrace, New Relic) to deliver advanced analytics, dashboards, anomaly detection, alerting, and custom extensions.
- Design and optimise synthetic monitoring journeys and cloud integrations to enhance automation, telemetry ingestion, and monitoring coverage.
- Utilise scripting and automation tools (e.g. PowerShell, Terraform) to deploy, manage, and scale observability infrastructure (e.g. ActiveGates) across AWS and GCP environments.
- Build and mentor a strong community of observability engineers and Champions across ANZ.
What will you bring?
To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:
- 12+ years IT experience, including 8+ years in observability (Dynatrace, New Relic, OpenTelemetry).
- Proven leader of large-scale observability programs across regions and business units.
- Strong stakeholder influence, shaping architecture, tooling strategies, and adoption.
- Own and evolve enterprise observability roadmap aligned to platform strategy.
- Define and drive standards, frameworks, and practices (e.g., OpenTelemetry, SRE, AIOps).
- Lead enterprise OpenTelemetry (OTEL) strategy, governance, and ecosystem integration.
- Architect and deliver scalable observability platforms (metrics, logs, traces, alerting).
- Build and operate observability infrastructure across AWS, GCP, and hybrid environments.
- Establish governance for access, data, naming, and operational standards at scale.
- Enable engineering teams via CI/CD integration, self-service capabilities, and standardised instrumentation.
- Drive optimisation through automation, intelligent alerting, and cost-efficient data management.
- Build and mentor observability communities, fostering engineering excellence and innovation.
