At ANZ, we're shaping a world where people and communities thrive, driven by a common goal: to improve the financial wellbeing and sustainability of our millions of customers.

About the Role

As a Senior Lawyer in the Dispute Resolution team, you will be responsible for providing commercial, practical and strategic advice in relation to a broad range of contentious matters. Reporting to the Head of Legal, Dispute Resolution Group, you will independently manage and actively drive our strategy on major disputes, litigation and regulatory enforcement activity. You will work as part of a high performing and supportive team and have the opportunity to develop subject-matter expertise and strong leadership, presentation and influencing skills.

Banking is changing and we’re changing with it, giving our people great opportunities to try new things, learn and grow. Whatever your role at ANZ, you’ll be building your future, while helping to build ours.

Role Location: Melbourne, VIC

Role Type: Permanent, Full-time

What will your day look like?

  • Proactive management of legal risk, business reputation and exposure to contentious disputes and litigation through the provision of clear, high quality, timely, commercially relevant and cost-effective legal services.
  • Independent and active management of disputes and litigation, with a focus on developing, implementing and driving a sound litigation strategy.
  • Establish and maintain strong and positive relationships with internal stakeholders and external law firms to minimise business disruption caused by disputes and to help the business deliver on its key priorities.
  • Contributing to a strong and supportive team culture through the sharing of knowledge and continuous growth in core legal and non-legal skills.

What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

  • Strong post-qualification experience in dispute resolution and commercial litigation, gained from a major Australian law firm or comparable in-house legal team. Experience in class actions and regulatory enforcement proceedings would be an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strategically considered and commercially relevant legal advice.
  • Continuous growth mindset and a demonstrated ability to adapt to an evolving legal risk landscape, including the ability to develop expertise in new and emerging areas of legal and regulatory risk.
  • Strong project management and interpersonal skills with the confidence to liaise effectively with corporate function stakeholders and individuals at all levels including senior management.
  • Team focused with a flexible attitude and the willingness to go the extra mile.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work under pressure, excellent time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities to meet changing demands.
  • Common sense, curiosity and a love of learning.

You’re not expected to have 100% of these skills. At ANZ a growth mindset is at the heart of our culture, so if you have most of these things in your toolbox, we’d love to hear from you.
