Our mission is to combine business and technology capabilities to enable analytics, reporting, and data asset development by users across ANZ’s Australia Retail Data Portfolio.
This Senior Cloud Data Engineer role is a technical specialist position and a senior member of the Cloud Enablement team within the Data Portfolio, which is part of the Australia Retail division. As a Senior Cloud Data Engineer in the Data Portfolio, you will work in a hybrid cloud environment and be responsible for building critical data applications and frameworks to enable essential data functions and provide trustworthy input for key business decision-making.
You will bring data domain knowledge and deep expertise on specific topics to implement solutions in cloud environments. A key element of this role is driving the data capability agenda within the Data Portfolio, ensuring the delivery of best practice end-to-end data solutions while combining the discipline of software engineering that respects ANZ architecture standards. You will challenge inefficient engineering practices, influence change in your field to drive better business outcomes, and coach junior engineers to ensure the data applications meet high standards.

What will your day look like?
The Data Enablement team’s role is to provide a stable, secure, and optimized data platform and data engineering frameworks for all data product teams. In this role, you will:
- Work in a high-performance squad with software engineering disciple and modern data engineering focus
- Leverage cloud-native data technologies to create data engineering frameworks and DataOps tooling
- Build and support critical large-scale distributed data applications
- Act as a technical escalation point, taking on technical challenges and owning them through to resolution
- Uplift and embed DataOps best practices for broad analytics community
What will you bring?
This role requires solid experience in cloud native data technologies, accompanied by strong hands-on experience, and a demonstrated understanding of development best practice. Specifically, this would cover the following:
- Hands on experience and a deep understanding of modern data processing tools and frameworks e.g. Apache Spark, Flink, Kafka, Airflow and working with object storage
- Solid understanding and proven experience of cloud data technologies, preferably with GCP e.g. Big Query, S3, Cloud Composer (Airflow), Cloud Run, Cloud SQL and Pub/Sub
- Demonstrated experience in developing high workload data applications and complex data pipelines on massively parallel process (MPP) architecture
- Strong and demonstrated coding skills in Python, following test-driven development (TDD)
- 5+ years of active involvement in software engineering and data engineering practice
- Previous experience in a senior engineering role within large scale projects
- Confident understanding of CI/CD toolchains e.g. GitHub, GitHub Actions, Docker/Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform, Artifactory etc.
- Demonstrated ability to ensure the quality, reliability, and integrity of data assets through rigorous testing and validation processes.
