About the Role

As an Operational Risk Lead in our Operational Risk – Business & Private Bank team, you’ll play a key role providing independent operational risk oversight across ANZ’s Business and Private Bank (B&PB) division.

 

This is a key second line risk role which operates to ensure the B&PB division effectively manages its operational risks in accordance with ANZ’s Non-Financial Risk Framework. You will support the Division to continue to strengthen its risk culture by influencing the business to have appropriate risk conversations involving the right people discussing the right matters at the right time.

 

You will proactively engage with business and first line risk stakeholders to maintain knowledge of key business activities and projects/initiatives led by or impacting the Division. This is critical to delivering on your responsibility to independently oversight, review, challenge and influence the effective management of operational risks within the Division.

 

You will play a key role in conducting independent operational risk thematic reviews and report outcomes to senior business and risk personnel.


Role Location: 833 Collins Street, Docklands VIC 3008 (or open to other locations)
Role Type: Permanent, full-time (40 hours per week)

What will your day look like?

As the Operational Risk Lead, you will be accountable for:

  • Reviewing, challenging, and providing advice on B&BP Division’s operational risk management in line with ANZ’s Non-Financial Risk Framework, including risk assessments for projects and initiatives.
  • Tracking risk profiles, significant operational risks, and treatment plans; escalating issues where timelines or actions are inadequate.
  • Building collaborative relationships with business and risk stakeholders, attending governance forums, and delivering clear, actionable risk opinions.
  • Managing thematic reviews, identifying opportunities to improve risk management maturity, and driving understanding of technology, data, and AI risks across the business.
  • Promoting a strong operational risk culture, providing thought leadership, collaborating with risk teams, and supporting the Head of Operational Risk when needed.
  • Managing functional costs within budget, ensuring compliance with expenditure policies, and delivering cost-effective, value-adding professional services.

What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in the role, you will ideally bring the following:

  • Extensive experience in non-financial risk or audit (open to consider similar experience through business governance & controls/assurance roles)
  • Excellent inter-personal skills, have the courage to ‘speak up’ and deliver difficult messages
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong, open and collaborative working relationships, including communicating with and influencing senior stakeholders as well as negotiate change
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills 
  • Demonstrated experience with banking products and financial service distribution channels
  • Strong understanding and experience in non-financial risk frameworks, methodologies, policies and practices 
  • Ability to challenge the status quo and bring new approaches to problem solving
  • Experience in data analysis with the ability to synthesise multiple data sources to tell a coherent story / provide practical insight
  • Able to manage priorities and conflicting issues is a professional and risk based manner
  • Proactive and persistent with a continuous improvement mindset
