About the Role

 

This role leads and manages Operational and Resilience risk assessments, regulatory and policy change, and partners with business teams to sustainably design and embed risk controls into business processes, systems and data. With a focus on end‑to‑end value chains, the role provides risk insight and analysis to influence governance and decision‑making, ensures adherence to risk and compliance frameworks, and identifies and escalates control gaps where effectiveness is insufficient. The role acts as a trusted first line risk partner, managing the delivery of high‑quality 1LOD risk management and assurance, strengthening stakeholder accountability, building capability, and uplifting risk culture.

What will your day look like?

 

What you'll be doing:

 

•     Lead operational and resilience risk assessments across processes, systems, data and value chains.
•     Implement and oversee risk management across key themes including resilience, third-party, conduct, fraud, financial crime, regulatory and people risk.
•     Partner with Group Technology to design, embed and continuously improve effective risk controls and practices.
•     Integrate risk requirements into business processes, transformation initiatives and regulatory change activities.
•     Assess control effectiveness, identify gaps and drive risk-based remediation and improvement actions.
•     Apply and influence enterprise risk frameworks, policies and standards within the First Line of Defence.
•     Monitor risk metrics, indicators and emerging issues, escalating material concerns where appropriate.
•     Leverage data, analytics and automation to enhance risk insight, forecasting and decision-making.
•     Deliver risk reporting, governance materials and actionable insights to support management and assurance activities.
•     Act as a trusted risk advisor, promoting accountability, strong risk culture and effective risk ownership.
•     Collaborate with Line 2 and Centres of Excellence to ensure consistency and alignment of risk practices.
•     Build organisational risk capability through coaching, guidance and quality assurance.
•     Drive continuous improvement through lessons learned, assurance outcomes, incidents and regulatory feedback.
•     Lead and develop team members, fostering a high-performing, inclusive and risk-aware culture.
•     Build strong stakeholder relationships and communities of practice that support knowledge sharing and professional excellence.

What will you bring?

 

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:


•    Extensive knowledge of operational and resilience risk management frameworks, standards, tooling and methodologies.
•    Strong understanding of operational risk and control design, control effectiveness and assurance concepts.
•    Strong understanding of operational risk themes including resilience, third party, conduct, fraud, financial crime, legal, physical, regulatory, transaction processing and people risk.
•    Experience managing and developing teams, complemented by initiative leadership capability—running Kanban workflows with epics, driving prioritisation, and ensuring disciplined execution against objectives.
•    Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills, with the ability to influence as a trusted Line 1 risk partner.
•    Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing, preparation of materials for governance and management decision‑making.
•    Expertise in ServiceNow, Qliksense or Tableau report creation that provides insights and enables data analytics for key stakeholders.
•    Strong advisory skills to build awareness and understanding in the business.
•    Sound judgement and a risk‑based mindset, balancing customer, business and regulatory outcomes.
•    Experience coordinating operational and resilience risk assessments across business processes, systems, data and value chains.
•    Experience supporting regulatory and policy change, including impact assessment and business implementation.
•    Experience reviewing control design and effectiveness, identifying gaps and supporting remediation activities.
•    Experience preparing risk insights and analysis to support governance, assurance and senior leadership forums.
•    Experience working with Line 2 risk teams and Centres of Excellence to ensure alignment of risk expectations.
•    Experience contributing to continuous improvement of risk practices, frameworks or ways of working.
•    Strong understanding of regulatory obligations, policy requirements and regulatory change management within financial services.
•    Understanding of end‑to‑end value chains, business processes, systems and data.
•    Understanding of enterprise risk governance, escalation and reporting arrangements.
•    Experience in developing team members for career growth.
•    Experience in setting expectations and achieving target dates in a dynamic environment.
•    Strong ability to apply operational and resilience risk expertise pragmatically within business contexts.
•    Strong analytical skills to assess risks, evaluate controls and identify risk themes and insights.
•    Ability to interpret and translate regulatory and risk requirements into practical business outcomes.
