As a Senior Mainframe DB2 Database Administrator, you'll join our Mainframe Core Systems team and play a key role in ensuring the performance, availability, resilience and strategic evolution of ANZ's critical DB2 database platforms.

 

About the Role

 

Reporting to the Team Leader, Mainframe Core Systems, this senior technical role is responsible for providing expert consultation, leadership and operational support across ANZ's DB2 database environment.

 

You will be a subject matter expert for DB2 database administration, performance tuning, availability management, recovery processes and platform architecture, while mentoring team members and partnering closely with application, infrastructure and service support teams to deliver highly available and secure services.

 

This role also participates in a 24x7 on-call support roster supporting critical production systems.

What will your day look like?

 

 

As a Senior Mainframe DB2 Database Administrator, you will:

 

  • Provide technical leadership and expert advice on DB2 database administration, performance tuning, monitoring and optimisation.
  • Lead the implementation of new DB2 functionality and platform enhancements in collaboration with application development teams and stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that improve platform stability, service quality and cost efficiency.
  • Partner with technology teams, production support teams and application stakeholders to deliver effective DB2-based solutions.
  • Support business and technical leaders by providing guidance on critical platform issues, risks and opportunities.
  • Promote best practices and educate technology teams on effective DB2 database usage, including remote access technologies.
  • Perform capacity planning, performance analysis, troubleshooting and root-cause investigations across production environments.
  • Ensure database services support current and future high-availability requirements.
  • Contribute to project estimations, solution design and strategic platform planning.
  • Mentor and develop junior team members, fostering technical excellence across the team.
  • Participate in a rotating 24x7 on-call support roster.

 

What will you bring?

 

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring:

 

  • Extensive experience in IBM DB2 Database Administration within large-scale enterprise mainframe environments.
  • Deep expertise in database availability, resilience, capacity planning, performance tuning, backup and recovery, security, and data integrity.
  • Strong knowledge of IBM z/OS and DB2 architecture, subsystem design, and performance management.
  • Experience with IBM and BMC DB2 utilities and related database administration tools.
  • Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues in mission-critical production environments.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements into practical, cost-effective technology solutions.
  • Experience driving operational improvements, service enhancements, and technology change initiatives.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, collaboration, and communication skills across business and technology teams.
  • Strong customer focus, commercial acumen, and pragmatic approach to technology delivery.
  • Exposure to CDC (Change Data Capture) technologies, including IMS and DB2 (desirable).
  • Understanding of banking technology environments, enterprise infrastructure, networking, communications protocols, and storage technologies (desirable).
  • Experience working within project delivery frameworks and methodologies (desirable).
  • A collaborative, continuous improvement mindset with a passion for solving complex technical challenges.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, strategic thinking, initiative, and results-oriented delivery capabilities.
