The Role

We have a Data Engineer - Chapter Lead role available within the Marketing & Digital Data Area.

The Marketing & Digital Data Area’s mission is to enable targeted customer growth and retention by using meaningful data, scientific methods and automation to make the best decisions and provide highly-relevant and timely communications in-channel. Our work is focussed on five key themes:

  • Understanding our customers and anticipating their needs and actions with self-learning predictive models and deep analytical data
  • Providing our customers with the most relevant experience at every step by making the best decisions based on all relevant information every time
  • Enabling our stakeholders to be data-driven and fluent through championing self-service tools and analytics
  • Guiding the business in doing the right work the right way with specific, deep and actionable insights
  • Supporting sustainable and strategic initiative delivery with key data assets and integrations for personalisation use-cases

 

As a Chapter Lead, you are responsible for building world class capability in your chapter. You’ll be a promoter and ambassador of the new culture and ways of working. You will bring domain knowledge or deep expertise, and develop this expertise and T-shaped capability in your chapter members ensuring knowledge sharing, up-skilling, career development, and standards / governance / QA are embraced and adopted.

This role is pivotal in building and fostering a strong data-driven culture across the broader department and our stakeholders. This role is an active member of the Data Area’s leadership team, supports the growth of capability across the Data Area, and works with other Chapter Leads, Capability Area Leads and Product Owners to define and deliver priority features. This role has approximately 3 direct reports and may also be across the work of offshore data engineers.

What will your day look like

  • Coach and develop chapter members, building a deep level of business understanding and technical skill, including training and upskilling
  • Listen and act on staff feedback
  • Run knowledge sharing and/or skills uplift sessions with the broader data community through chapter-of-chapter meetups
  • Champion and lead continuous improvement activities that improve velocity & quality of work, deepen stakeholder engagement, and grow business impact
  • Coach/mentor squad members on Data Engineering principles & techniques and contribute to the (hands on) technical delivery of squad objectives including batch and real-time data engineering and integration between platforms and technologies
  • Source and integrate data from a variety of platforms and using different technologies to support analysis and modelling activities
  • Initiate, design and implement innovative trends in the field of data engineering
  • Have a clear understanding of the end-to-end analytics, data science and marketing journey as well as the ability to support, define and deliver the Data Area Roadmap
  • Work closely with other areas and leaders to shape and influence delivery of dependencies and grow usage of delivered features
  • Maximise value from vendor relationships and participate in vendor management activities

Strong leadership and expert communication

  • Proven ability to lead and inspire
  • Expert communication and presentation skills to effectively communicate to all stakeholders (technical and non-technical)
  • A natural when it comes to coaching and mentoring a team of engineers to deliver data integration and transformation features efficiently
  • Strong problem solving, story-telling and presentation skills

 

Deep data engineering expertise:

  • Strong experience with traditional database platforms, languages and very large datasets (many TBs) e.g. Teradata, Oracle, Hadoop, SQL, T-SQL, PL/SQL, Postgres, MySQL
  • Hands-on deep knowledge and experience with tools and techniques for different aspects of data engineering, consumption and automation e.g. DataStage, SSIS, Informatica, Python, SAS, R, Java, APIs, Kafka
  • Experience with some components of Data Science environments e.g. Mlflow, Pyspark, Airflow, Jupyter, S3 Storage, Miniconda, Grafana, Prometheus, Trino, Superset, Hive
  • Data Mapping, Data Modelling Techniques & Data Wrangling
  • Good understanding of DevOps principles and approaches

 

Industry and domain knowledge:

  • Good understanding of the Banking system and products, service, channels and associated data
  • Experience working on data-driven marketing/personalisation or data science initiatives
  • Good understanding of next-best-action concepts, operating models, and approaches to arbitration and real-time decisioning highly desired
  • Experience working with digital behavioural data (clickstream), transactional data and Adobe products highly desired
