About the Role
The Audit Director – Business & Private Bank is accountable for leading the timely delivery of independent, high-quality third line assurance across the Business & Private Bank portfolio.
The role provides independent assurance over the effectiveness of governance, risk management and controls underpinning customer outcomes, products, conduct, service reliability and regulatory compliance, including end-to-end customer value chains and Critical Operations owned by the portfolio.
Reporting to the General Manager Audit – Australia Retail, Business & Private Bank and Audit Operations & Quality, this role plays a key leadership position within Internal Audit, shaping how assurance is delivered across the portfolio, maintaining strong senior stakeholder relationships, supporting the delivery of Internal Audit’s strategic priorities, and role modelling the standards, behaviours and independence expected of audit leaders.

What could your day look like?
As Audit Director – Business & Private Bank, you will be accountable for:
- Accountable for the delivery of independent audit coverage across the Business & Private Bank portfolio, including end-to-end customer value chains and critical operations, aligned to key risks, customer outcomes and the approved audit plan.
- Form clear, evidence-based views on the effectiveness of governance, risk management and controls, providing credible insights to senior stakeholders.
- Own portfolio-level risk assessment and audit planning, shaping coverage priorities across customer value chains and critical operations.
- Provide constructive challenge and influence to business, risk and operations leaders to strengthen control environments and risk management practices.
- Oversee audit delivery, ensuring high-quality, timely outcomes, strong audit discipline and delivery in line with Internal Audit methodology and Global Internal Audit Standards.
- Collaborate across Internal Audit, including Centres of Audit and subject matter experts, to ensure comprehensive and coordinated assurance coverage across the portfolio.
- Lead, develop and mentor audit teams, building capability, depth and a high-performance culture.
- Drive continuous improvement in audit quality, efficiency and stakeholder experience.
- Maintain oversight of delivery risks, ensuring appropriate governance, quality and execution standards.
- Support regulatory engagement, including supervisory interactions and requests, and contribute to Internal Audit’s strategic priorities and initiatives.
What will you bring?
To grow and be successful in this role, you’ll ideally bring the following:
- Internal Audit and assurance expertise: Extensive experience delivering complex audits or assurance engagements within large, regulated organisations, with deep expertise in Internal Audit methodology, risk-based planning, execution, reporting and issue validation.
- Business acumen: Expert understanding of business banking and operating models, including key products, services and end‑to‑end processes, together with a deep understanding of material risks such as conduct risk, fraud risk and regulatory compliance, including familiarity with key banking regulatory obligations.
- Customer‑facing or consumer banking environments: Experience auditing or working in customer‑facing banking environments where customer outcomes, conduct and service reliability are critical considerations.
- Data-enabled assurance: Experience using data analytics and data-enabled assurance techniques to inform audit scoping, testing strategies, risk assessment and insight generation.
- Stakeholder engagement and influence: Strong ability to engage credibly with senior business, risk and operations stakeholders, provide constructive challenge and influence improvements in risk management and control environments.
- Leadership and people development: Demonstrated experience leading, coaching and developing high-performing audit teams, building capability depth, professional judgement and succession within complex assurance environments.
- Regulatory engagement exposure: Experience contributing to regulatory reviews, supervisory interactions or remediation activity within a regulated financial services environment is advantageous.
- Business & Private Bank expertise: Experience working within or auditing business and private banking portfolios in the Australian market, including familiarity with local operating models, customer segments and regulatory context is advantageous.
- Qualifications: Tertiary qualification and/or relevant professional certification (e.g. CPA, CA, CIA or equivalent), with postgraduate qualifications in accounting, audit, operational risk, compliance or related disciplines advantageous.
