Department:  Risk Group Compliance - Financial Crime
Division:  Risk
Location:  Melbourne

About Us

At ANZ, we're shaping a world where people and communities thrive, driven by a common goal: to improve the financial wellbeing and sustainability of our millions of customers.

About the Role

As the AML Variation Manager within the FCTM Operational Excellence team, you will play a key role in providing independent quality assurance over AML investigations conducted by Operational teams. You will assess investigation quality in line with the approved AML Quality Framework, identifying trends, key risks and insights relating to investigation quality, regulatory compliance and alignment to ANZ’s risk appetite.

A core focus of the role is translating quality outcomes into actionable insights that support continuous improvement. You will identify knowledge and capability gaps and support targeted uplift activities, such as facilitating calibration sessions and delivering insight‑driven learning or knowledge‑sharing sessions to improve investigation consistency and risk awareness.

Collaboration is central to this role. You will work closely with Operational teams across Melbourne, as well as Group Capability Centres in Bengaluru and Manila, to promote alignment, consistent standards and continuous improvement in AML investigation practices.

Banking is changing and we’re changing with it, giving our people great opportunities to try new things, learn and grow. Whatever your role at ANZ, you’ll be building your future, while helping to build ours.

Role Type: Permanent, Full-time

Role Location: 833 Collins Street, Docklands VIC 3008

You will be responsible for:

  • Analysing quality performance at individual, cell and portfolio level to identify trends, issues and risk themes
  • Providing clear, actionable insights to management and operational teams to support improved investigation outcomes
  • Identifying root causes of quality issues and recommending targeted remediation actions
  • Supporting capability uplift across AML Operations by:
    • Delivering targeted learning or knowledge‑sharing sessions based on quality findings
    • Facilitating calibration sessions to promote consistent application of policy, process and risk appetite
    • Contributing subject‑matter input to broader learning or CPD initiatives
  • Producing concise quality reporting that highlights key themes, risks and improvement opportunities
  • Building strong and effective working relationships across teams within FCTM
  • Using quality insights to inform and recommend improvements to:
    • Process execution and procedural effectiveness
    • Control and detection effectiveness, where relevant
    • Overall investigation quality and consistency
  • Applying sound risk judgement and escalating material or systemic issues in line with governance expectations

What will you bring?

To be successful in this role, you will ideally bring:

  • Strong experience in AML operations and investigations, with the ability to analyse quality outcomes and identify money laundering, terrorism financing and broader financial crime risks
  • Demonstrated capability to apply sound, risk‑based judgement using information from internal systems, policies and external sources
  • Experience interpreting operational and quality data to identify trends, root causes and performance insights
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate quality themes and recommendations to a range of stakeholders
  • The ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced environment, managing competing priorities while working both independently and collaboratively
  • A proactive mindset, with the ability to identify issues and recommend practical, risk‑aligned improvements
  • Good planning, organisation and self‑prioritisation skills
  • Solid knowledge of the banking environment, products and services
  • Proven ability to build constructive, open and collaborative working relationships across operational and risk teams
