About the Role

 

The Head of Risk Assurance is responsible for leading ANZ’s independent risk assurance function, providing the Board, Executive Committee, regulators and other key stakeholders with confidence that material risks across the Group are being effectively identified, assessed and managed. 

 

This newly created role ensures robust oversight of the Group’s risk frameworks and control environments, and drives a strong culture of accountability and continuous improvement in risk management practices.

What will your day look like?

As Head of Risk Assurance, you are accountable for:

 

Strategic Leadership:


•    Leading the development and execution of ANZ’s risk assurance strategy aligned to APRA, ASIC, and global regulatory expectations
•    Partner with the CRO, Risk Leadership Team, and business executives to embed a robust risk and assurance culture
•    Assurance Oversight
•    Design and deliver an enterprise-wide risk assurance program covering credit, operational, compliance, conduct, technology, and financial crime risks.
•    Provide independent assurance on the effectiveness of risk frameworks, governance structures, and key controls
•    Drive consistent methodologies and standards for assurance reviews across divisions

 

Stakeholder Engagement:


•    Present risk assurance outcomes to the Risk Committee, Audit Committee, Board, and regulators
•    Build trusted relationships with regulators (APRA, ASIC, AUSTRAC) to ensure transparency and alignment with supervisory expectations
•    Partner with Internal Audit to ensure clear delineation and complementarity of scope
•    Lead, develop, and inspire a high-performing Risk Assurance team
•    Foster a culture of integrity, challenge, accountability, and professional excellence
•    Monitor emerging risk themes, industry trends, and regulatory developments to strengthen assurance practices
•    Identify systemic issues, root causes, and opportunities to enhance control effectiveness and business resilience

 

What will you bring?

 

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

 

  • Enterprise Risk Assurance Expertise: Proven success in designing and delivering enterprise-wide risk assurance programs, including methodologies, control testing, and reporting.
  • Regulatory & Board Engagement: Experience presenting assurance findings to Board Risk Committees and regulators, with strong knowledge of APRA, ASIC, CPS 220/230, and CPS 511.
  • Operational Risk Knowledge: Deep understanding of financial services operations (credit, treasury, technology, payments, financial crime) and how risk assurance applies across these areas.
  • Leadership & Team Management: Demonstrated ability to lead large, geographically dispersed teams and embed consistent assurance standards across divisions.
  • Root Cause & Remediation Skills: Strong capability in identifying systemic issues and driving sustainable remediation through root cause analysis.
  • Stakeholder Influence: Skilled in engaging and influencing senior stakeholders, including Boards, Executive Committees, and regulators.
  • Technical Risk Proficiency: Advanced expertise in operational and compliance risk, risk control frameworks, and internal audit practices.
  • Qualifications: Tertiary education in finance, risk, or accounting, with extensive experience progressing into executive-level accountability.
