Head of Transformation Portfolio Oversight

Head of Transformation Portfolio Oversight

Req ID:  120762
Department:  Risk Assurance & Strategic Oversight
Division:  Risk
Location:  Melbourne, Brisbane

About Us

At ANZ, we're shaping a world where people and communities thrive, driven by a common goal: to improve the financial wellbeing and sustainability of our millions of customers.

About the Role

The Senior Manager, Transformation Portfolio Oversight is accountable for providing independent second-line risk oversight of ANZ’s prioritised portfolio of strategic programs. The role exists to ensure transformation initiatives are governed, designed and delivered in a manner that appropriately identifies, assesses and manages non-financial risks, and that risk issues are surfaced early and addressed decisively so programs deliver sustainable outcomes within risk appetite and regulatory expectations.

The role acts as a trusted Voice of Risk to executive and Board forums by maintaining a portfolio-level view of risk posture, interdependencies, and emerging themes across programs. Through judgement-led challenge, clear escalation and strong influence, the role improves decision quality at key risk inflection points and supports consistent integration of transformation risks into existing operational risk, compliance, resilience and control frameworks.

Banking is changing and we're changing with it, giving our people great opportunities to try new things, learn and grow. Whatever your role at ANZ, you'll be building your future, while helping to build ours.

Role Type: Permanent
Role Location: Melbourne or Brisbane
Work Hours: Full time

What will your day look like?

What you'll be doing:

Portfolio-level second line oversight & independent challenge
•    Provide independent, risk-based and proportionate oversight of ANZ’s prioritised strategic programs across initiation, design, build, implementation and transition into BAU.
•    Form independent views on material operational, compliance, conduct, technology, data and delivery risks across the portfolio, including risk concentrations and cumulative exposure (e.g. change saturation, control debt and key interdependencies).
•    Assess the adequacy and sustainability of governance and issue management arrangements supporting the portfolio.

Early intervention at key risk inflection points
•    Engage early on material decisions (prioritisation, scope, design trade-offs, delivery resets, risk acceptance and BAU handover) to help identify and treat risks before they crystallise.
•    Challenge the quality of decision-making, ensuring options, risk implications and residual exposures are explicit and within appetite, and that time-bound, well-justified risk acceptances are the exception rather than the norm.

Non-financial risk outcomes & control sustainability
•    Maintain an outcomes focus: test whether transformation reduces risk, strengthens the control environment and avoids creation of new material control gaps.
•    Provide challenge on operational resilience, critical operations, third party dependencies and customer impacts, ensuring controls are embedded and sustainable post-delivery.
•    Strengthen discipline around readiness-to-operate and transition to BAU, including clarity of ownership, monitoring and assurance where appropriate.

Governance, escalation & portfolio risk posture reporting
•    Support effective portfolio governance by contributing to (and where required attending) key program and portfolio forums, with clear escalation thresholds and timely surfacing of material issues.
•    Deliver concise, decision-oriented risk reporting and thematic insights to OREC and Board/Board Committees, focused on implications, emerging risks and required management action rather than status updates.
•    Escalate concerns where risk exposures exceed appetite, delivery plans are not credible, or remediation progress is insufficient.

Stakeholder engagement & influence
•    Build strong, credible relationships with Line 1 transformation leaders, risk owners, Compliance, Technology Risk, Financial Crime, Resilience and other Group Risk teams—balancing constructive partnering with independence.
•    Influence outcomes without direct authority, providing clear, well-reasoned challenge in high-pressure environments characterised by competing priorities.

Team & capability leadership
•    Provide leadership, coaching and quality oversight to risk staff supporting transformation portfolio oversight, setting clear standards for judgement, documentation and escalation.
•    Contribute to continuous improvement of strategic change oversight practices, tools, reporting and training to uplift portfolio capability and consistency.
•    Role model strong risk culture, sound judgement and ANZ values across all interactions.

What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

•    Extensive experience delivering independent second line oversight of large scale, complex strategic change and transformation portfolios within a regulated financial services environment.
•    Strong understanding of operational risk management, compliance risk and control frameworks, including risk identification, assessment, control effectiveness, issue management, escalation and governance across program lifecycles.
•    Demonstrated ability to assess and prioritise material non-financial risks, maintain a portfolio-level perspective, and apply sound judgement in high-ambiguity environments.
•    Proven capability to provide a clear, concise and defensible Voice of Risk to senior executives and governance forums, including Executive committees and Board/Board Committees.
•    Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills, including the ability to challenge constructively in complex environments characterised by delivery pressure and competing priorities.
•    Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including drafting executive-ready risk insights, deep dives and papers that support informed decision-making.
•    Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent experience in risk management, governance, transformation, assurance or related disciplines.
•    Extensive financial services experience (typically 12+ years) in roles involving strategic change oversight, operational risk, compliance, audit or transformation governance.
