About the Role

 

As a Chief Risk Officer, you are responsible for ensuring the financial and reputational integrity of the ANZ Group of businesses through the effective treatment and mitigation of risks (Credit, Market, Operational, Compliance, Technology, Liquidity, and Strategic). The CRO must be a credible and visible Champion for a strong ‘risk culture’ amongst colleagues and peers.

 

Your responsibilities also include those as leader of the Philippine Risk team (performance plans, direct line management, career development), and influencer across the business in the Philippines more broadly. As such, you will be a key channel of leadership communication, resource planning, problem escalation/resolution, ownership point for the country Risk Appetite Statement working in partnership with the Country Head.

 

A key part of your role is to work with the in-country businesses, the Country Head and senior management to determine the risk appetite for country, establish and implement portfolio reviews by business segment, oversee portfolio management, risk analytics and reporting and ensure consistency of application of risk controls.

Given the changing nature of the global financial markets, and global and regional macroeconomics and geopolitical issues, this role will need to remain focussed on understanding the changes in the marketplace and hence the changing risk setting and communicating these proactively and clearly to senior management. Connecting globally across various geographies with senior management, the person in this role will be required to articulate the Bank's risk appetite to the Country and facilitate the execution of the Bank's strategy.

What will your day look like?

You will be responsible for the following:

 

  • In conjunction with the country leadership team, establishes and documents risk appetite for the Country in line with ANZ Group strategy and policies, and as cascaded by Board Risk Committee and ensure that these are well understood and accepted by the stakeholders.
  • Communicates and manages the budget for Philippines Risk and Compliance.
  • Supports execution of business operating plans.
  • Maintains portfolio credit quality within established tolerances, avoiding unexpected credit (and non-lending) losses.
  • Ensures operating processes are robust to minimise the potential for loss including credit, markets, and non-lending (operating) losses.
  • Monitors Markets exposures to ensure that they remain within limits and that prudent parameters are in place.
  • Works in collaboration and consultation with key stakeholders from across different business functions to strengthen risk governance structure and infrastructure.
  • Builds and maintains strong professional relationships with the Country Regulators, Audit (internal & external) and relevant stakeholders to support franchise sustainability.
  • Maintains effective ownership of in-country risk management, credit policies, control frameworks, and regulatory compliance processes.
  • Presents country portfolio profile and any emerging risks to Divisional RMC as requested.
  • Contributes to a strong risk culture in the Country. Provides support and guidance to the business to embed a ‘risk-based culture’ promoting credit quality, controls, compliance, and high governance standards.

 

What will you bring?


To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

 

  • Extensive years of experience in corporate and institutional risk.
  • Strong understanding of the risk/reward philosophy underpinning sound banking practices.
  • Experience dealing with external banking regulators.
  • Executive management experience in international business environments.
  • Strong leadership capabilities, good communication skills, high EQ, and decisiveness. Ability to communicate confidently with a wide variety of people across cultures, geographies, and technical segments (legal, middle office, front office, sales, RMs, credit executives, etc.). This is a pre-requisite for the role.
  • Developed knowledge and exposure to Risk & Compliance management frameworks.
  • Strong collaboration, relationship, network and communication skills.
  • Experience in leading a team and demonstrated concern for the team and ability to grow others.
  • Strategic management and thought leadership skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal direction, deliver to real-time business demands and able to manage conflicting priorities
