About the Role

 

As an Anti‑Money Laundering (AML) Operations Team Lead in our Financial Crime – Risk team, you’ll play a key role in helping keep the bank, our customers, and the community safe. You’ll be joining an experienced team responsible for ANZ’s compliance across a wide range of Financial Crime areas, including Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, Sanctions, Bribery, Corruption, Fraud, and Investigations.

 

In this role, you will lead a team of investigators who assess customer behaviour and transactional activity to prevent money launderers, terrorists, and sanctioned individuals or entities from using our products and services for criminal activity.

Work Hours: Day Shift, M-F, 50/50 Hybrid Work Set-up after the training

What will your day look like?

 

The AML Operations Team Lead is accountable for:

  • Optimising the execution of operational processes and AML investigations (including complex investigations) to meet FCTM’s service offering and Statement of Work obligations.
  • Overseeing the quality and accuracy of AML investigations carried out by AML Operations staff, ensuring adherence to regulatory obligations and ANZ’s risk tolerance.
  • Driving continuous improvement in AML investigation outcomes and operational performance through effective capacity and capability planning and forecasting.
  • Managing the allocation of work to AML Analysts and Investigators using Active Operations Management (capacity and capability forecasting) to ensure adherence to SLOs and SLAs in the short, medium, and long term.
  • Completing regular analysis of quality, accuracy, and operational performance at both individual and cell levels (approximately 15 operations staff) to:
  • Understanding and actioning insights identified by support teams such as Operational Excellence.
  • Supporting the knowledge uplift of operations staff at all levels (L1, L2, and L3), including training on risk typologies, process execution, investigation techniques, and risk mitigation to achieve correct outcomes for ANZ.
  • Coaching, developing, and creating growth plans for AML Analysts and Investigators.
  • Building effective stakeholder relationships across FCTM and various Capability Centre locations.
  • Suggesting improvements related to process and procedural efficiencies, enhancements to detection scenarios and controls that improve conversion, and other operational improvements that uplift outcomes and performance. 

What will you bring?

 

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

  • Solid background in AML Operations or Investigations, with strong analytical thinking and a clear understanding of Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, and other Financial Crime risks.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment, supporting other workstreams when needed and managing tasks independently.
  • Experience in coaching and developing people, helping build a cohesive and collaborative team culture.
  • Strong communication skills—both written and verbal—with the confidence to present to stakeholders and larger groups.
  • Proven ability to plan, organise and prioritise workloads for yourself and your team.
  • A proactive mindset, able to identify issues early and recommend sustainable solutions.
  • Comfortable working with data and operational metrics to support decision‑making.
  • Experience in the banking industry, including an understanding of banking products and services.
  • Ability to build strong, open working relationships with a range of stakeholders.
  • Previous team lead or coaching experience in an AML setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver through others and make sound, risk‑based decisions.
  • Resilience and adaptability when dealing with changing priorities and high‑pressure situations.
  • Proficiency in Atlassian Confluence.
