Role Location:  Melbourne
Role Type:  Permanent, Full-time

ANZ’s Government Relations and Policy team leads the bank’s engagement with Australian state and Commonwealth governments and elected officials and their policy agendas.

As the Head of Public Policy, you will be accountable for leading the policy work of the Government Relations and Policy team. The team is located within the bank’s Communications and Public Affairs (CPA) function.

Reporting to the Group General Manager, Government Relations and Policy, you will manage a small team of policy experts to engage with policy processes and help prepare witnesses for Parliamentary hearings. You will be expected to build respectful and ethical relationships with government officials who hold responsibility for banking-related policy. You will also need to develop and maintain strong connections with internal stakeholders to ensure the bank responds appropriately to policy developments and expectations.

In leading ANZ’s response to policy issues, this role plays an important part in giving effect to ANZ’s purpose, culture and values. We strive to listen, learn, and continuously improve—seeking feedback from and responding to customers, colleagues, investors, and regulators. We aspire to exemplify fair and responsible behaviour, and to set the bar for high standards of conduct.

About You

To grow and be successful in this role, you’ll ideally bring the following:

  • Substantial experience in public policy, governmental, or legislative processes.
  • A proven reputation for establishing and maintaining sound relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • The ability to identify emerging policy issues and manage ANZ’s response in a manner that aligns with ANZ’s purpose, culture, and values.
  • A well-developed approach to managing non-financial risks, including the preparedness to respectfully challenge others and hold yourself to account.
  • A deeply held commitment to collaborating effectively with colleagues to achieve organizational objectives, and a track record of driving delivery and execution while maintaining a values-led approach.
  • A rapid but thoughtful approach to working within short timeframes on complex matters.
  • Highly proficient written and broader communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex matters for diverse audiences.
  • Advanced academic degree in law, economics, policy, commerce, or a related field.
  • The capacity to exemplify ANZ’s leadership behaviours and values, and a leadership mindset grounded in clarity, ambition, energy, and respect.
  • Demonstrated capability to influence senior executives and drive business performance through providing strategic and commercial advice.
  • The ability to lead and motivate diverse teams, anchoring your approach in ANZ’s values and leadership behaviours. This includes a reputation for coaching, encouraging curiosity and investing in people development.
