About the Role

 

As a Director, Sanctions Advisory – Institutional COE, you will provide advisory support and oversight of Institutional’s compliance ANZ’s Sanctions Compliance Program managing within risk appetite and in accordance with the NFR Framework. This role supports all business units across Institutional including support to offshore locations.  

 

This role is within the Institutional (Insto) Division Financial Crime and Fraud Centre of Excellence (COE) focusing on financial crime risk themes including Anti Money Laundering (AML); Counter Terrorism Financing (CTF); Sanctions; Anti Bribery & Corruption (ABAC) and Internal and External Fraud Risk.  This is a Leadership role reporting directly to the Head of Financial Crime & Fraud COE Institutional. 

 

You are to lead top-down risk identification, assessments, regulatory or policy change implementation, escalates gaps where controls or frameworks are not effective, and partners with business teams to sustainably design and embed robust sanctions controls.

What will your day look like?

  • Deliver Financial Crime and Fraud risk management activities (focused on Sanctions) across processes, products and customer journeys  
  • Translate financial crime requirements into clear business outcomes and value  
  • Apply Group Risk policies, standards and regulatory obligations within the division  
  • Embed financial crime requirements into business processes in a practical, efficient and customer-focused way  
  • Support impact assessments and implementation of regulatory, policy and risk standard changes  
  • Conduct risk assessments, including control effectiveness and residual risk analysis  
  • Partner with the business to design, uplift and embed effective Financial Crime and Fraud controls  
  • Identify control gaps and emerging risks, supporting development of remediation actions  
  • Provide guidance on risk applicability, controls, issues and events management  
  • Deliver data-driven risk insights, including risk appetite across customers, channels and products  
  • Monitor control effectiveness and escalate risks outside appetite  
  • Support governance through risk reporting, insights and analysis  
  • Escalate material risks, control failures and non-compliance in line with protocols  
  • Act as a trusted Line 1 risk partner, driving ownership and accountability  
  • Ensure alignment with Group Risk and COE stakeholders across expectations and requirements  
  • Support uplift of Financial Crime and Fraud capability and risk culture through guidance and coaching  
  • Promote Line 1 accountability in risk management practices 

What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following: 

 

  • Deep Sanctions SME and strong knowledge of financial crime risk, risk management frameworks and regulatory obligations covering Financial Crime Risk (L1 and L2 risk themes is required). 
  • Strong ability to apply risk expertise practically within business and operational contexts across multiple teams or processes. 
  • Strong understanding if the NFR Framework  
  • Ability to make judgement calls that balance business and customer outcomes. 
  • Strong capability in risk analytics, tooling and automation. 
  • Demonstrated ability to support the evolution and embedding of risk frameworks in financial services environments. 
  • Demonstrated ability to translate data and insights into practical risk mitigation strategies, including uplift initiatives. 
  • Strong understanding of controls design. 
  • Demonstrated ability to think pragmatically and take risk-based approaches to accelerate effective and efficient execution of initiatives. 
  • Decision-making authority for risk appetite and mitigation.  
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills. 
  • Experience supporting advice to senior leaders and risk committees on operational and regulatory issues. 
  • Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and drive cross-functional collaboration.
