About the Role

 

As a Staff Engineer in the NZ Domain, you’ll play a crucial role in driving end‑to‑end technical strategy, architecture, and delivery for high‑impact platforms and products, operating as a senior individual contributor with broad influence across multiple engineering squads. You will design scalable, resilient, compliant, and cost‑effective systems while elevating engineering standards, managing technical debt and technical risks, and ensuring alignment with enterprise engineering patterns and practices. As the recognised technical authority, you will guide teams on how solutions should be built, mentor and build capability across senior engineers and squads, and partner closely with Product, Security, and Operations to ship business‑critical platforms—drawing on deep engineering mastery, strong systems thinking, and exceptional stakeholder management.

What will your day look like?

 

  • Lead and participate in architecture reviews, design discussions, and decision-making forums that influence multiple squads.
  • Provide hands‑on technical leadership, including writing high‑quality code, reviewing critical PRs, and guiding senior engineers through complex problems.
  • Dive deep into system performance, reliability, scalability, and security aspects—identifying risks early and driving systemic improvements.
  • Partner with engineering leads to estimate, plan, sequence, and deliver long-range initiatives across multiple workstreams.
  • Drive technical roadmaps, identify tech debt, and prioritize modernization or platform initiatives with long-term impact.
  • Host and lead technical workshops, knowledge-sharing sessions, and architecture guilds to uplift engineering maturity.
  • Participate in incident reviews, root cause analysis, and drive remediation for recurring or systemic issues.
  • Communicate regularly with leadership to provide clear updates on progress, risks, and decision trade-offs.
  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers—multiplying expertise across the engineering org.
  • Ensure compliance standards, data privacy, and secure-by-design principles are woven into every stage of development.
  • Collaborate across teams to balance innovation, reliability, and speed, making high-quality technical decisions that align with business goals.

What will you bring?

 

  • Must have 14+ years of engineering experience with deep architecture and system design competency.
  • Expertise in designing high scale, distributed systems, including microservices, event-driven architecture, API platforms, and data-intensive systems.
  • Hands-on proficiency in any backend languages (Java/Kotlin/Go/Node/C#) and strong understanding of cloud-native patterns (containers, messaging, caching).
  • Extensive experience in leading Java development at an enterprise level.
  • Extensive experience working on solution design and API design.
  • Experience in Java development at an enterprise level (Spring Boot, Java 8+, Spring)
  • Extensive experience leading API development and integration (REST/JSON, Kafka, message queues)
  • In depth technical knowledge of database systems (Oracle, SQL Server).
  • Strong experience in public cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP), Kubernetes, Terraform/IaC, and modern CI/CD.
  • Solid grounding in observability, SRE principles, incident management, and performance engineering.
  • Knowledge of secure coding, compliance frameworks, and enterprise-grade governance.
  • Provides governance over solution design within the squad to ensure it aligns with the Architect and follows established patterns and best practices. While it is expected that other squad members will also contribute to or complete solution design, in all instances it is expected this role will provide a level of governance.

Detailed Description

 

  • Responsible for ensuring all designs are presented and approved by the relevant Tech Area design forum and Technical Review Forums.
  • As solution design is completed it is the responsibility of this role to ensure feedback is provided to the relevant Architect so the Architecture can be updated to accommodate changes that where required as part of solution design (bridging the gap between architecture and delivery
  • Proven ability to influence architecture and engineering strategy across multiple teams without formal authority.
  • Experience driving cross-team programs, platform modernization, and technical initiatives with significant business impact.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with senior stakeholders, translate technical decisions into business outcomes, and drive consensus.
  • Strong track record of delivering large, complex, multi-quarter initiatives end-to-end.
  • Capability to break down ambiguous problems into clear, sequenced, achievable plans.
  • Proficiency in balancing speed, quality, security, and cost while driving technical excellence.
  • Ability to proactively identify architectural risks, operational gaps, or scaling challenges and drive long-term solutions.
  • A systems thinker who understands failure modes, trade-offs, and how to design for resilience and cost efficiency.
  • Passion for mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar across the team.
  • Advocates for best practices, code quality, and engineering craftsmanship.
