About the Role

 

As a Chapter Lead for the Institutional Data team, you will be responsible for leading the development, maintenance, and support of Institutional Data and Analytics platform (IDAP). 

 

You will work closely with a core Data and Analytics Engineering team, a central innovation and development function, and data domain teams across the Institutional division, to lead platform automation, data & analytics pipelines, data engineering, infrastructure configuration, common code building blocks and libraries that will contribute towards a divisional and enterprise-wide data mesh. 

 

In this role, you will: 

  • Lead a multi-disciplinary, global team of data and cloud Engineers. 
  • Design, build, test, deploy and maintain a highly scalable, resilient, cost-effective, and recoverable data management platform using a software engineering mindset and applying the principles of DevSecOps. 
  • Provide strong technical leadership in the use of Public Cloud Platforms (AWS), and be a strong advocate for open-source Big Data technologies 
  • Promote standards, patterns, and guidelines in the form of reusable software artefacts. 
  • Author, and tune complex data pipelines, workflows, and data structures. 
  • Provide advice around improving platforms, processes, and tools. 
  • Ensure a high-level of quality for the technical design of data products using industry and ANZ best practices.  
  • Manage and mentor engineers; helping them to develop their skills, whilst driving a strong engineering culture within the team. 
  • Support innovation by monitoring emerging technologies/methods and championing those that will add value. 

 

This role will report to the Capability Area Lead of the platform.

What will your day look like?

 

  • Collaborating with business and technology stakeholders to understand their domain and demands on the data platform, elaborating on these together with the platform architect to produce solution options. 
  • Providing advice on platform improvements, processes, and tooling. 
  • Collaborating with data and cloud engineers to develop solution options, and maintaining key design artefacts, e.g., Solution Design overview. 
  • Presenting key design artefacts with the architect to the appropriate governance forums. 
  • Collaborating with other architects, analysts, engineers, and subject matter experts to ensure that the established design guidelines and patterns are clearly communicated and understood. Also ensuring projects align with it. 
  • Building relationships with key business and technology stakeholders, providing technical guidance and support in their quest to contribute towards an Institutional and enterprise data mesh. 
  • Contributing towards the evaluation of new technologies to support capability gaps, and performance improvements. 
  • Mentor team members, and teams across the divisional-wide data mesh. 

 

What will you bring?

 

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in a relevant Principal Engineer / Engineering Manager / Chapter Lead position managing or leading a team building and operating public cloud services in a Data and Analytics context. 
  • Strong leadership skills to build, guide, and motivate a team of data and cloud engineers - this includes talent development, conflict resolution, and ensuring team alignment with business goals. 
  • Experience in managing large-scale data and analytics projects, including planning, execution, and delivery within time and budget constraints. 
  • Ability to align data engineering and advanced analytics strategies with broader business objectives. This includes understanding how data and analytics initiatives drive value for the business. 
  • A broad range of technical skills and at least 8+ years of hands-on experience working across the AWS services (IaaS, PaaS and serverless technologies – not limited to Glue, S3, EMR, Redshift, DataZone, Managed Airflow etc.). 
  • Strong proficiency in programming (Python, Golang or Java, bash, JavaScript, SQL).
  • Tertiary qualification with a focus on software development, and the relevant AWS Cloud Certifications (AWS Professional preferred). 
  • Proven capability working with IaC and CI/CD tools (Terraform, Codefresh, Code Build, Jenkins, Bamboo, GitHub).
  • Deep experience working with Docker, Kubernetes, or OpenShift, and the ability to troubleshoot complex Kubernetes errors. 
  • Data modelling, query performance and tuning. 
  • Proven skill in consulting, communicating, and influencing. 
  • Nice to have: 
    • Application Performance Monitoring tools, such as Dynatrace, NewRelic etc. 
    • Working with Agile, Lean and/or continuous delivery approaches.
