The primary responsibilities of this people focused role will be to engage & manage our business & product stakeholders, develop our Engineering Chapter Leads and be accountable for the wider uplift in Chapter members’ capabilities, as well as vendor partners, to build world class capability across the specialist engineering and testing functions supporting the Tribe.  


As an Engineering Capability Area Lead (CAL), you will use your technical skill and experience developing software of exemplary quality to guide and mentor engineers towards an agreed technical standard and vision.  

You will use your interpersonal and stakeholder management skills to work closely with value stream leads & product owners and collaboratively with your peers encourage squad and engineering alignment.  


You understand the role that engineering plays in the broader business context and work closely with engineers to drive and prioritise non-functional technical requirements to uplift, maintain, and establish that goal. You will be seen as a mentor and coach and be available for engineers to seek help on technical questions from reviewing a pull request or debugging a CI build to drafting Disaster Recovery plans or establishing a working relationship with another tribe. Your remit is broad, flexible, and evolving. 


As part of the Leadership Team, you will play a critical role in role modelling a collaborative, safe, and enthusiastic culture and way of working. You will provide opportunities for engineers to learn and grow within their roles and mentor them, providing valuable guidance based on your past experiences and knowledge of the industry. 

What will your day look like


  • Understand the needs of the customer and work with Product Owners and other stakeholders to ensure engineering teams are setup to deliver on outcomes on time with high quality. Drive the technical maturity of the team and application. 
  • Provide guidance and Engineering Leadership for squads/product teams in your area and work to uplift engineering practices and release cadence and confidence through established patterns and practices. 
  • Create shared clarity – bring people on the journey, creating a shared understanding of context, purpose, goals and progress. Even if its ambiguous, create focus and enough certainty to deliver and succeed. 
  • Be a champion for the completion of the project and manage/resolve blockers leveraging your strong interpersonal skills across the bank and the various tribes 
  • Understand the needs of the engineering team and be a strong voice for them. 
  • Ensure the engineers are supported and provided opportunities to learn and grow. 
  • Perform line management duties and resource the squads throughout the engineering function.  Hire great engineers to complement the engineering workforce. 
  • Facilitate and drive engineering collaboration and foster a collaborative working environment and culture between squads, tribes, and the broader engineering domain.

  • Exceptional business / product stakeholders (distributed locations) management skills to support the business outcomes with your engineering team. 
  • Expert level knowledge of at least one programming language (not required to be in our technology stack) and its surrounding ecosystem and familiarity with several others. 
  • Fundamental engineering design principals (KISS, YAGNI, DRY, SOLID) and engineering practices (such as DDD, TDD, BDD) are your forte and you understand when to deploy them and why. 
  • Experience running application design workshops, and designing and architecting large applications in a restricted context where compromise is essential 
  • Deep expertise in your Chapter’s area combined with a broad capability and the proven ability to innovate and adapt to the latest developments 
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to inspire, mentor, coach and develop others 
  • Experience leading high performing diverse teams, including leading through and advocating change 
  • Passionate about learning and continuous improvement to develop capability within the chapter 
  • Ability to quickly grasp new content and the ability to translate this to your Chapter 
  • Proven analytical skills and a history of making educated data-driven decisions 
  • Ability to ask for and give constructive feedback
