Mō te tūranga - About the role
As Manager, Operational Risk (Model Risk), you’ll play a critical role in strengthening ANZ’s first line management of model risks. Sitting within the Operational & Resilience Risk Centre of Expertise, this role partners closely with business, technology and analytics teams to ensure models (including algorithms, automation, AI and bots) are designed, used and governed safely and effectively.
You’ll coordinate risk assessments, support regulatory and policy change, and help embed sustainable controls across end‑to‑end value chains. With a strong focus on model risk, you’ll provide practical advice on model design, validation and safe use, ensuring risks are understood, controlled and escalated appropriately. Acting as a trusted first line risk partner, you’ll support robust decision‑making, strong control effectiveness, and a resilient risk culture.

The Manager, Operational Risk (Model Risk) position is a dynamic and impactful role with a broad range of responsibilities. Some of your day-to-day activities may include the below:
- Managing and coordinating model risk assessments
- Providing specialist model risk advice on the design, use and governance of models (including algorithms, AI, automation and bots) used in business decision‑making
- Partnering with business and control owners to ensure models are fit‑for‑purpose, appropriately validated and remain effective as business context changes
- Advising on safe model usage and building awareness of risks where models may not perform as intended
- Supporting controls testing teams to validate model effectiveness and control design
- Partnering with business teams to design, uplift and embed sustainable model risk controls
- Supporting regulatory and policy change through impact assessments and business implementation activities
- Reviewing control design and effectiveness, identifying gaps and supporting remediation planning and delivery
- Preparing risk insights, analysis and materials to support governance forums and management decision‑making
- Acting as a trusted first line risk partner, reinforcing accountability for operational, resilience and model risk
- Contributing to capability uplift and continuous improvement across the Operational & Resilience Risk COE
Ōu Pūkenga? - What will you bring?
To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:
- Strong experience in model risk management within a regulated or complex environment
- Demonstrated understanding of model risk, including model design, validation, controls and governance for AI, automation or algorithm‑based decision tools
- Ability to apply risk judgement pragmatically and advise the business on safe and effective model usage
- Experience leading complex risk assessments, reviewing control design and effectiveness reviews and supporting risk remediation activities across financial services environments
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify risk themes, emerging issues and control gaps
- Confidence engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, including business, technology, analytics and risk teams
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including preparing risk materials for governance forums
- A risk‑based mindset with sound judgement, balancing customer, business and regulatory outcomes
- A proactive approach to learning, collaboration and continuous uplift of resilience and model risk capability
