Mō te tūranga - About the role

 

As Head of Operational & Resilience Risk within ANZ New Zealand’s 1st Line of Defence (1LOD) Non‑Financial Risk (NFR) function, you’ll play a critical role in strengthening how operational and resilience risks are identified, managed and governed across the business.

 

Leading the Operational & Resilience Risk Centre of Excellence (COE), which includes material risks such as third party risk (BS11), Models, and business continuity, this role focuses on building sustainable, end‑to‑end risk capability across value chains, business processes, systems and data. You’ll partner closely with business leaders and Group Risk to embed effective risk controls, respond to regulatory and policy change, and uplift risk culture and accountability - ensuring ANZ continues to deliver for customers through disruption and change.

 

At the heart of the role is enabling strong first line ownership of risk, delivering high‑quality risk management and assurance outcomes, and providing clear insight to inform governance and decision‑making.

You’ll be accountable for leading operational and resilience risk management, which includes critical risks such as third party risk (BS11), models risk and resilience risk  and  across the NZ business, with a strong focus on practical application and continuous uplift. This includes:

 

  • Acting as a trusted 1st line risk partner to senior business leaders, providing pragmatic advice, insight and constructive challenge on operational and resilience risk matters.
  • Leading end‑to‑end operational and resilience risk assessments across processes, systems, data and value chains, and supporting the design and embedding of effective, sustainable risk controls.
  • Driving the interpretation and application of enterprise risk frameworks, policies and standards, ensuring regulatory and compliance obligations are understood and met in practice.
  • Supporting regulatory and policy change, including impact assessments and business implementation.
  • Providing risk insight, analysis and reporting to governance and senior decision‑making forums, including remediation planning and delivery.
  • Leveraging data, analytics, automation and AI to enhance risk monitoring, insight and predictive risk management.
  • Leading and developing a team of specialists within the COE, championing first line accountability, capability uplift and a strong risk culture across the organisation.

To be successful in this role, you’ll bring a blend of deep risk expertise, strong leadership capability and the ability to influence at senior levels.

 

Essential experience and expertise

  • Strong expertise in operational risk and resilience risk management frameworks, methodologies and control design.
  • Proven experience working within financial services, including interpreting regulatory obligations and managing regulatory or policy change.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess control effectiveness, identify risk themes, and drive meaningful remediation outcomes.
  • Experience providing risk insights and analysis to senior leaders and governance forums.
  • Confidence using data, analytics and automation to support risk monitoring and decision‑making.

 

Leadership and interpersonal skills

  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing capability, with the ability to operate as a trusted adviser and constructive challenger.
  • Strategic thinking combined with pragmatic decision‑making and delivery focus.
  • Proven people leadership capability, with experience building high‑performing teams and uplifting capability through change.
  • Clear, confident written and verbal communication skills.
