Ko Mātou – About Us
Kia Hanga I Te Ao, E Ora Ai, E Tupu Ai, Te Tangata Me Te Kainga. At ANZ, we’re shaping a world where people and communities thrive, driven by a common goal: to improve the financial wellbeing and sustainability of our millions of customers.
Mō te tūranga - About the role
You will play a critical leadership role in strengthening the effectiveness and management of non‑financial risk across the business. You will act as the primary non‑financial risk adviser and reliance point for the Managing Director and Business Unit leadership, providing clear, trusted, and pragmatic advice on non‑financial risk matters.
You will partner closely with senior leaders to promote a strong risk and compliance culture, ensure regulatory and licensing requirements are met, and provide forward‑looking risk insight that enables safe and sustainable business outcomes. Central to the role is developing and maintaining a deep understanding of the Business Unit’s non‑financial risk profile - proactively identifying where risk exposure is changing and where targeted uplift activity is required.
This recruitment covers two Non‑Financial Risk leadership roles:
- Head of NFR, Business & Agri NZ
- Head of NFR, Funds Management NZ
Each role plays a critical part in strengthening non‑financial risk management and operates within a hub‑and‑spoke model, partnering closely with the NFR Hub and other Business Unit NFR leaders to enable safe, compliant, and sustainable outcomes for the enterprise.
Banking is changing and we’re changing with it, giving our people great opportunities to try new things, learn and grow. Whatever your role at ANZ, you’ll be building your future, while helping to build ours.
Role Type: Full-time, Permanent
Role Location: Auckland or Wellington
Ka aha tō rā e kite ai? - What will your day look like
You will balance strategic leadership with hands‑on risk engagement - working alongside Business Unit leaders as their key point of contact for non‑financial risk matters, helping them anticipate and manage emerging risks, understand the implications of events and incidents, and make informed decisions about risk profile impacts and required uplift activity.
You will guide leaders through complex change initiatives, ensuring risk frameworks are applied in a practical, value‑adding way. You will contribute to governance forums, engage with regulators and senior stakeholders as required, and work extremely closely with the NFR Hub and other Business Unit NFR spokes to ensure alignment, consistency, and effective enterprise‑wide risk management.
A critical part of the role is maintaining a strong understanding of downstream and upstream dependencies, recognising how activities, controls, and outcomes across other Business Units and Group functions may impact your Business Unit’s risk profile.
Key responsibilities include:
- Act as the primary non‑financial risk reliance point for the Managing Director and Business Unit leadership, providing trusted advice, insight, and constructive challenge on all NFR matters.
- Lead end‑to‑end non‑financial risk management across the Business Unit, including risk in change, events, incidents, issues, and controls.
- Develop and maintain a clear understanding of the Business Unit’s non‑financial risk profile, proactively assessing how events, incidents, emerging risks, and issues may impact that profile and where uplift or additional risk treatment is required.
- Provide strategic non‑financial risk advice to senior leaders and governance forums, translating risk insights into clear business implications and actions.
- Strengthen the control environment through proactive risk identification, assessment, and assurance, including influencing and supporting uplift in Business Unit‑owned control design and operation.
- Work closely with the NFR Hub and other Business Unit NFR spokes, building strong enterprise relationships and managing upstream and downstream dependencies that may impact the Business Unit’s risk profile.
Ōu Pūkenga? - What will you bring?
To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:
- Strong leadership experience in non‑financial or operational risk within a regulated financial services environment.
- Demonstrated ability to act as a trusted adviser and reliance point for senior executives on complex risk matters.
- Deep knowledge of risk frameworks, regulatory obligations, and control design and assurance.
- A strategic yet pragmatic mindset, with the ability to connect risk events, incidents, and insights to changes in the risk profile and required uplift activity.
- Proven ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships and navigate enterprise‑wide interdependencies.
- A collaborative leadership style and a strong commitment to developing team and enterprise risk capability.
You’re not expected to have 100% of these skills. At ANZ a growth mindset is at the heart of our culture, so if you have most of these things in your toolbox, we’d love to hear from you.
