Mō te tūranga - About the role

The ANZ Economics and Markets Research team is headed by Chief Economist, Sharon Zollner. Sharon’s team of experienced strategists and economists provide forecasts and research on the New Zealand economy and financial markets.

 

As an ANZ Economist you will be pivotal in delivering forecasts and analysis to support internal teams and external clients to better understand the macroeconomic landscape, empowering them to make well-informed business decisions. You will be responsible for monitoring and forecasting overall economic trends, providing strategic recommendation and contributing to key business forums and events. Your expertise will be essential in shaping economic strategies and ensuring stakeholders are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of the economy.

Ka aha tō rā e kite ai? - What will your day look like?

As an Economist you will:

  • Support macroeconomic forecasting, including assisting the dealing room around significant data releases.

  • Prepare and deliver timely, relevant, and accurate analyses of macroeconomic data and current themes, contributing to the operations of ANZ Research and the Bank’s and our customers’ decision-making processes.

  • Collaborate with ANZ’s NZ Chief Economist and the wider Research team to promote sustainable growth across the business and help clients achieve their business objectives.

  • Present data and reports to senior executives, staff, customers, shareholders, and various other professional, business, academic, and community organisations.

  • Respond to enquiries from print, radio, and electronic media regarding the New Zealand economy and economic policy.

  • Enhance the brand and reputation of ANZ by adhering to ANZ policies, processes, and external regulatory and legislative requirements.

Ōu Pūkenga? - What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

  • Proven experience in an economic policy-making institution (e.g., RBNZ, Treasury) or as an economist in a financial institution with macroeconomic forecasting experience.

  • A Bachelor of Economics degree (or equivalent), with Honours and relevant postgraduate studies being highly regarded.

  • In-depth knowledge of the New Zealand economy and its principal economic policy-making institutions.

  • Proficiency in applying modern quantitative and statistical techniques.

  • Strong ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and succinctly, both in writing and orally, and to present confidently to internal and external stakeholders across various forums.

  • Extensive experience in navigating data and forecasting infrastructure to ensure our analyses are well-founded.
