The ANZ Economics and Markets Research team is headed by Chief Economist, Sharon Zollner. Sharon’s team of experienced strategists and economists provide forecasts and research on the New Zealand economy and financial markets.
As the ANZ Agricultural Economist, you will be key in delivering forecasts and analysis to support internal teams and external clients understand the primary sector's economic landscape. As New Zealand’s largest agricultural lender, ANZ relies on this role to shape growth strategies and manage risks within the agricultural sector, driving sustainable growth and reinforcing ANZ’s position as a trusted thought leader.

Ka aha tō rā e kite ai? - What will your day look like?
As the Agricultural Economist you will:

Drive primary sector forecasting and create insightful publications covering all aspects of the primary sectors, while also understanding and communicating the broader macroeconomic context.

Monitor, analyse, and forecast New Zealand's primary sectors and markets, building robust databases, spreadsheets, and models, and providing timely forecasts and commentary on data releases.

Provide thought leadership and in-depth commentary, swiftly producing well-considered pieces on topical primary sector issues and identifying key research topics.

Collaborate with ANZ’s NZ Chief Economist and the wider Research team to promote sustainable growth across the business and help clients achieve their business objectives.

Present data and reports to senior executives, staff, customers, shareholders, and various other professional, business, academic, and community organisations.

Respond to enquiries from print, radio, and electronic media regarding developments and trends in New Zealand’s primary sectors and the broader economic landscape.

Enhance ANZ’s brand and reputation across the agricultural landscape by adhering to ANZ policies, processes, and external regulatory and legislative requirements.
Ōu Pūkenga? - What will you bring?
To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:
-
Proven experience in an Agribusiness policy-making institution, or as an experienced economist in a financial institution with significant forecasting experience and a passion for the primary sectors

A degree in economics, finance or agribusiness (or equivalent), with Honours and relevant postgraduate studies being highly regarded.

In-depth knowledge of the New Zealand economy and its principal economic policy-making institutions, with the ability to confidently discuss the broader economy and the primary sector’s role within it including farm-level operations and strategy

Proficiency in applying modern quantitative and statistical techniques.

Strong ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and succinctly, both in writing and orally, and to present confidently to internal and external stakeholders across various forums.

Extensive experience in navigating data and forecasting infrastructure to ensure our analyses are well-founded.
